Welcome to MyPalmLife!

After years of reporting on Palm hardware and software, we regret to inform our readers that we have decided to end this site. PalmSource and Palm, Inc no longer seem to be supporting this once wonderful platform and thus there is no real sense to continue this site. From time to time, there will be Palm news and that will be found on our sister site, SvenOnTech, in addition to other incredible industry stories and commentaries! Be sure to point your RSS readers and browsers to this site to keep up to date.

We thank you for visiting our site over the years and will continue to keep this shell archived here for those who wish to search previous posts of ours. It is our hope to soon have MyPalmLife's articles integrated completely in SvenOnTech soon. But, until that happens, continue to enjoy MPL as is!

Skweezer Selected by Bloglines to Improve Mobile Experience

Greenlight Wireless Corporation announced that its Skweezer technology, which optimizes Web content for mobile devices, has been integrated into the mobile version of Bloglines (www.bloglines.com), the worlds number one online RSS aggregator.

Bloglines Mobile (mobile.bloglines.com) users now view “skweezed” versions of the Web pages they access through their favorite RSS feeds. This allows Bloglines to both accelerate download speeds and present content that is easier to view and navigate on the small displays found on cell phones and PDAs. With the Skweezer technology, Bloglines also provides mobile access to more content than ever before by using Skweezer’s paging feature, which allows Web pages to load that would otherwise be too memory-intensive for most devices.

“The Skweezer technology provides a significantly improved experience for Bloglines Mobile users by speeding download time and optimizing content for small mobile displays,” said Robyn DeuPree, Sr. Product Manager for Bloglines, a division of Ask.com. “Our Bloglines Mobile users love the current product, and the Skweezer technology makes the experience even better.”

“Bloglines is the industry-leading RSS reader with a proven history of innovation,” says Joey Lynch, VP of Business Development at Greenlight Wireless. “Once again Bloglines has taken a leadership position in the mobile RSS space and we’re very pleased to be contributing to this effort.”

Skweezer’s proprietary compression algorithms, developed and refined over the past five years, significantly reduce Web content typically to 15% or less of its original file size. This allows Web pages to load much more quickly and has the added benefit of greatly reducing network capacity. Skweezer technology is completely platform independent and can be used with Pocket PC, Palm, Symbian, MS Smartphone, Blackberry, PSP2, and XHTML-based cell phone devices.

Palm Supports Signing of Hands-Free Cell-Phone Bill

Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced its enthusiastic support of State Senator Joe Simitian’s (D-Palo Alto) SB-1613, which will require California drivers who choose to use a cell phone while driving to use a hands-free device. The bill is scheduled to be signed by Governor Schwarzenegger today and to go into effect on July 1, 2008.

California’s largest producer of cell phones, Palm is the first and only cell-phone manufacturer to publicly support the bill. The company believes that SB-1613 responsibly addresses evidence that handheld cell-phone use increases the risk of accidents. Palm also believes that while this bill is not the first in the United States, its passage in California could be instrumental in leading other states to follow suit and improve driving safety.

“With the technology available today, there is no reason for a driver to be holding a cell phone while behind the wheel,” said Mary Doyle, senior vice president and general counsel at Palm. “Headset technology, both wired and wireless, is readily available, and call quality using a hands-free headset is generally excellent. With our Treo smartphones, Palm gives drivers numerous options for helping keep their eyes on the road and two hands on the wheel, focusing first and foremost on driving.”

Palm® Treo™ smartphones fully support hands-free use. They are equipped with speaker phones and are compatible with a number of hands-free accessories, including headsets, earpieces and car kits offered by leading automobile manufacturers.

Demand for Mobile Access to Social Networking Sites Growing

2006Skweezer users are visiting social networking sites with increasing frequency, displacing traditional Web portals and search engines among the list of most visited sites.

According to Greenlight Wireless, MySpace is the first social networking site to appear among the top five most highly visited sites by Skweezer’s mobile users, which was determined by a weekly traffic report generated for the first week of August. Similar sites that allow users to share information and meet online, such as Flickr, del.icio.us, and Friendster, have also experienced rapid uptake by Skweezer users in recent months. As a result of the growing popularity of link sharing services, Skweezer has a new feature that allows users to save browsing favorites to del.icio.us, Furl, Simpy or BlinkList from their cell phone or PDA.

“In the last quarter, we’ve partnered with a number of search, bookmarking, RSS, and shared media sites to mobile-enable their content,” says Kevin Perkins, CEO of Greenlight Wireless. “When combined with Advertizer, our mobile advertising solution, these social networks can now effectively monetize their free content onto the third screen.”

Skweezer is a free service that optimizes Web pages, searches, and e-mail for use on PDAs and cell phones. Mobile Internet users access Skweezer by visiting www.skweezer.net, then use the portal as a “wireless gateway” to browse and search the Web. Skweezer compresses and reformats content being downloaded, so that it loads faster, looks better, and is easier to navigate. Skweezer includes an e-mail client, RSS reader, address book, site directory, and other useful features designed specifically for the mobile environment. Skweezer is also completely platform independent and can be accessed from Pocket PC, Palm, MS Smartphone, Blackberry, Symbian, PSP2, and WAP 2.0 compliant devices.

Palm and TomTom Team Up to Make Your Treo a GPS Smartphone

For Palm® Treo™ smartphone users and GPS enthusiasts, Palm Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced the Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition, featuring new TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software. Drivers using the new GPS Navigator with their Treo smartphones can rely on voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions to easily find their destinations as well as millions of points of interest, including gas stations, restaurants, parks, airports and more. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 is available today exclusively for Palm’s GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition.

Palm’s new Bluetooth® enabled SiRFstarIII™ GPS receiver, which features a sleek design and easier-to-see LED lights, seamlessly pairs with Palm Treo 650, Treo 700w and Treo 700p smartphones. The product is simple to set up, thanks to a 1GB memory card preloaded with maps. Travelers simply pop the memory card into their Treo smartphone and pair the GPS receiver to access highway and street-level maps covering the United States and Canada. No desktop syncing or downloading of maps is required. Using the smartphone’s high-resolution screen, TomTom’s NAVIGATOR 6 software automatically shows the receiver’s (and hence, the car’s) current location.

“Smartphones are expanding the market for mobile navigation,” said Jim Schwabe, general manager of accessories for Palm, Inc. “The beauty is that this powerful GPS solution is always readily available because it’s part of something people are carrying anyway – their Treo smartphone.”

“The convergence of portable navigation devices is growing in the United States,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom. “Palm’s bundle offering with TomTom’s new NAVIGATOR 6 software reflects our joint efforts to continue providing customers with essential smartphone solutions. The Treo smartphone series provides an ideal platform for portable navigation.”

TomTom is the leading provider of personal navigation products and services. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software offers coast-to-coast and cross-border navigation, as well as new and enhanced options. New features include trip planning based on preferred arrival time, speed-limit information and integrated navigation to the smartphone’s contact list.

How It Works

The Bluetooth technology-enabled receiver identifies the car’s position using satellites. By communicating with the GPS receiver via Bluetooth, the Treo smartphone obtains real-time location information and displays 3-D maps on the Treo smartphone’s high-resolution screen. After a destination has been programmed, TomTom NAVIGATOR gives voice-guided, turn-by-turn instructions in one of more than 30 available voices. It will also automatically recalculate a route after a wrong turn, avoid roadblocks or circumvent traffic congestion.

Pricing and Availability

At $299 (estimated U.S. street price), Palm’s GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition includes a Bluetooth enabled SiRFstarIII GPS receiver, TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software featuring the latest Tele Atlas® maps, a 1GB memory card with preloaded maps of the continental United States and Canada, a vehicle device cradle with windshield mount and a charging system.

The GPS Navigator from Palm is now available at Palm’s online and retail stores.

The cooperative project represents Yelp’s first dedicated mobile effort and is available on all web-enabled phones.

“Searching for local information is a vital part of the mobile experience. “Our reviews have become an extremely powerful tool in determining which local businesses to patronize. We’re very excited to work with Palm on our first mobile effort, especially since Treo smartphones really allow users to experience some of the rich media features of Yelp,” said Jeremy Stoppelman, chief executive officer, Yelp. “The flexibility of the Treo platform made optimizing Yelp Mobile for Treo smartphones a lot easier than we originally anticipated. bars/nightlife, spas, and so forth);

– Browse by neighborhood (where available); and

– Refine the browse experience by neighborhood and category
(where available).

Co-branded Marketing

Palm has partnered with Yelp as the official mobile sponsor for the launch. The co-branded site will increase Palm’s exposure to the highly influential and opinionated Yelp community of reviewers. Pre-Announcement of Gravity Vane computer with Text-To-Speech

Does your mobile computer have a gravity input? Or, an eyes-free method of inputting text, while receiving audio computer output? Yours can if you get the new ECYPH computer. PN Technologies demonstrates cutting-edge patent pending techology in this compact wonder. Input is through a gravity vane accelerometer, mounted perpendicular to the centerline of the product, which is pointed at the center of the earth. Ergonomic buttons (see picture) allow for further user control. Computer output is handled via a Winbond Text-To-Speech chip, which renders ASCII text to human speech. All operations can thus be handled one-handed and eyes free, which leaves the user free to carry on other life activities, in a fashion unmatched by any other computer announced to date.

The method of using an accelerometer to input text to a computer is commonly referred to as Tilt-Text. ECYPH comes standard with an Audio Web Browser application and an Audio Terminal. Serial connection is offered standard, and Bluetooth connectivity is optional. ECYPH, like all PN Technologies innovations, is designed for interoperability with other computing products. Emergency Responders Rely on Palm in the Field

Palm Products Offer Flexibility to Emergency Responders Through National Library of Medicine’s WISER Mobile Application

Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the largest medical library in the world and an organization within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has created a free application for emergency responders called Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) that runs on Palm® Treo™ smartphones and handhelds. Emergency responders use Palm products paired with the WISER application as wireless or stand-alone reference tools for gathering information on hazardous substances and supporting comprehensive decision support. The solution serves as a reliable alternative to the current paper-based systems or outdated technology that emergency responders often contend with on a scene.

During the past 40 years, the NLM has produced a Hazardous Substance DataBank (HSDB) that compiles comprehensive data for close to 5,000 chemicals. The WISER application gives emergency responders access to relevant information on more than 400 of the most commonly encountered HSDB substances. The user interface is designed to present the data to the emergency responder in a format that is easy to access and comprehend during an emergency, as well as during disaster-preparedness training.

Available as an application download useable on Palm devices from http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov, the WISER application can travel wherever the responder needs to go. To date, NLM has recorded more than 11,000 application downloads for the Palm OS® application. The free application is stored either on the Palm device or a storage card (purchased separately) and then updated at the user’s discretion.

“Our objective with WISER has been to utilize the HSDB’s existing resource of authoritative data and package it specifically for the emergency-responder community,” said Marti Szczur, deputy associate director for Specialized Information Services Division at the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Md. “The marriage of mobile devices and the WISER application provides critical information in a useful format and enables the user to have access to this data on the site of a hazmat incident. Feedback from users is indicating that our investment in building WISER is contributing to American public health and safety.”

When handling hazardous-material (hazmat) incidents, emergency responders in general, and hazmat units in particular, have to make many decisions quickly. WISER can assist in identification of an unknown substance and provide information on immediate actions necessary to save lives and protect the environment. All this can be done right on the scene with Palm smartphones and handhelds.

“Mobility tools like Treo smartphones with the WISER application serve to shorten critical response time in crisis situations and provide accurate authoritative information,” said Lieutenant Chip Haake of the Tuscola Fire Department, Tuscola, Ill. “We have encouraged and implemented use of the Palm solution in order to make sure we’re using the latest life-saving technologies for the communities we serve, as well as our own team members.”

Larry Tucker, a regional disaster coordinator for the Duke Trauma Regional Advisory Committee, Durham, N.C., recommends that every emergency response (ER) and emergency medical services (EMS) agency use WISER on Palm devices. “The word needs to be spread that WISER is available – it’s a good program, it’s free and it’s accurate,” said Tucker. During the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, Tucker’s Palm handheld running WISER was crucial in dealing with the many chemicals in the air, water and food. His team immediately was able to identify chemicals and treat patients accordingly.

“Palm provides tools to solve critical needs that help individual citizens and whole communities,” said Tara Griffin, vice president of enterprise markets for Palm. “We’re proud that the National Institutes of Health and, specifically, the National Library of Medicine are delivering life-saving technology solutions on Palm products that offer flexibility and mobility to emergency responders across the country.”

About the National Library of Medicine and WISER

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), one of the organizations within the Health and Human Services Department’s National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world’s largest medical library. The Library collects materials and provides information and research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care. WISER data comes from the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB). HSDB is a toxicology data file on the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®). It contains information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. All data are referenced and derived from a core set of books, government documents, technical reports and selected primary journal literature.
